Founded in 1837 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Guilford College's heritage is central to the values of the college. The college's core values are based on, and consistent with, the five Quaker testimonies. The seven core values are community, diversity, equality, excellence, Integrity, Justice and stewardship. Guilford is dedicated to fostering a spirit of respect among all peoples as well as a sense of openness and inclusion. We desire the presence of international students and the enriching international perspectives that promote positive change in the world.

Our mission is to provide a transformative, practical, and excellent liberal arts education that produces critical thinkers in an inclusive and diverse environment. Guilford is guided by Quaker testimonies of community, equality, integrity, peace, simplicity and emphasizing creative problem solving skills, experience and enthusiasm.

Guilford draws on liberal arts traditions to prepare men and women for a lifetime of learning, work and constructive action dedicated to the betterment of the world. Toward that end the college provides:

- student-centered instruction that nurtures each individual amid an intentionally diverse community.
- a values-rich education that explores the ethical dimension of knowledge and promotes honesty, compassion, integrity, courage and respect for the individual.
- a challenging academic program that fosters critical and creative thinking through the development of essential skills: analysis, inquiry, communication, consensus-building, problem-solving and leadership.
- a global perspective that values people of other cultures and the natural environment in which we all live.
- access to work and service opportunities that forge a connection between thought and action.

With a student to faculty ratio of 16 to 1, Guilford expects each student to develop a broad understanding of our intellectual and social heritage, and at the same time to develop a special competence in one or more disciplines. Guilford's academic program has always been distinguished by a faculty with a passion for teaching. The college supports this priority by maintaining small class sections, even in introductory courses. Unlike a large research university, Guilford offers students the opportunity to meet in small classes and to participate with faculty in one-on-one interactions.
